Custom Made Sports Mouthguards
The risk of injuring your jaw or teeth is increased by playing strenuous sports or, for both children and adults, by doing Martial Arts.
Mouthguards which are available on the general commercial market are either ready-made “Stock” mouthguards or partially ready-made “Boil and Bite” mouthguards, both of which give the least possible protection against dental injuries during exercise and may actually be dangerous for the athlete (high risk of jaw fracture). The only thing they offer athletes is a false sense of security.
For this reason, the “Sports Dentistry Company” recommends that athletes use a custom made mouthguard in all sports where there is a risk of injury to the mouth or face.
The way custom made mouthguards are manufactured takes account of each athlete’s individual dental characteristics (a mix of adult and baby teeth, any orthodontic treatment, any peculiarities in the athlete’s bite). This ensures that they fit perfectly and provide maximum safety and protection.
Before the guard is made, an imprint of the client’s teeth is made, and then the guard is adjusted and checked. The client is only given the guard once all these steps have been completed.
Custom made mouthguards give excellent protection, and are easy for athletes to wear as they allow them to speak, breath and swallow easily. They can also be used for several seasons if they are cared for correctly and checked regularly by a dentist.
